Go Font Ur Self Chapter Six | Exhibition #005

I checked out the Go Font Ur Self Chapter Six exhibition down at No Vacancy gallery. Highlights included 'Mind the Lads' by Travis Millard, 'Also Drama' by Parra & John Siddle's 'Untitled'

Like always Go Font Ur Self is moving exhibition so if your reading this you've missed the Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane locals but for Adelaide folks are still in luck with the opening on Wednesday 15th of Dec at Clubhouse Lane from 6pm.

P.S. Must say the pricing of the works is incredibly reasonable, ranging from 250-450, which I rekon is a bargain. Scroll down for links to all the great artists/typographers involved.

I wanna be good but.... | Inspiration #012

Sometimes the struggle to find motivation to get work done can be a complete pain in the ass. Maybe even more so as a student. Maybe....
In this post I will explain the difficulties that I come across and some ways that I went about trying to break the repetitive work that exists in our lives .

Paul Arden's Book "Its Not How Good You Are, It's How Good You Want To Be."
A present from a friend, a brilliant book to pick up every now and then to flick through.

A fuel to get though “real world” work is the simple, polypropylene/paper product, Money. As students going through assignments we are not receiving money, we are not seeing something to be produced, solved or processed most of the time. We do; then we submit. Ends there. No more, just to obtain a mark out of 100. Kinda perverted in a way.
We have to get a sick satisfaction and kick out of receiving points for our work, that is our drive, A god damn number from someone you may or may not respect. Of course there is the will to succeed, to be the best. To actually have the determination to produce a product, poster or outcome that has developed from idea to finished piece, whatever that may be. And its all a learning curve to grow as a person, designer and blah, blah, blah.

But what if all that slips through. Disappears into an abyss of....nothingness. What then?

Positive Posters: 'Design-Off' | Event #002

Positive Posters held a Battle of the Universities at the Apple Store in Doncaster shopping centre. It was a hell of lot of fun to attend and shoot.

The participants. Six Students in total, Two each from Swinburne, Monash and Box Hill in a one hour competition for design supremacy.

The guidelines. The one hour time limit was evenly split in two. One half was to quickly search and sketch their ideas on the Apple iPad. The other half was to finalise their ideas in Adobe Illustrator CS5, on the Apple iMac. The Inspiration "Outta Sight, Outta Mind".

The actual setup in store was very interesting. Both iPad & iMacs were set to live stream to the onlooking crowd and the web. There was also a heap of tweeting and facebook updating going on too.

The contest. The Swinburne boys were working swiftly getting off to a great start in illustrator with what seemed to be an idea that they were set upon creating right from the start. The Monash boys were struggling to weave their minds (even with the Monash crowns) but working hard nonetheless and finished stong. The Box Hill Tafe Girls were off to a shaky start but quickly built a very nice visual that made for a tight finish for all competitors.

Jae Copp | Exhibition #002

Jae Copp's work last night at Gorker Gallery was pretty mind blowing. When you first walk into the space you see a vast body of work; then when you get up close, you see how truly intricate the work is. With common themes running through all pieces it feels both mature and powerful. If anything there are several common characters that proceed on a journey together around the room.

If you haven't seen either Eamo Donnelly's work at Lamington Drive or seen Jae Copp's work at Gorker Gallery I highly suggest you do both in one day as they are a stones throw from each other.

Jae Copp's show runs until the 19th September at Gorker Gallery, 395 Gore Street, Fitzroy.

Eamo Donnelly | Exhibition #001

I had the pleasure to meet Eamo Donnelly during this years agIdeas Design Conference and not only is he an incredibly down to earth guy but his work has a brilliant blend of character work, stylization and a colour palette befitting of it's Australian heritage. I personally love the spattering of inspiration of old polaroids, Big M carton's and the large illuminated Stubby Shop sign. It demonstrates an awareness of our close past and makes you feel like digging around your own dad's shed for inspiration.

Don't just look at the couple of images here, get down to 15-25 Keele St, Collingwood, Melbourne and check out the new space for Lamington Drive and Eamo's brilliant work. The exhibition runs until October 2nd.
